One of the more pointless, yet immensely satisfying things to do with free time is to design desktops for oneself. Lately I prefer more abstract designs, which are simply there for looks without distracting you from what matters, have lots of free space to place icons and create an illusion of 3D space. I would also sometimes design a set of icons specifically for that desktop.
