I start with a 7 inch by 8.4 inch at 72 dpi. I'll be increasing the resolution later in the process. Starting at low resolution not only makes it easier for brush strokes to render, but also forces you to work on the overall form of the drawing without going into tiny details too soon. This makes the resulting drawing more solid.
I'll be using a grey canvas to help the character stand out because I won't be painting a background. I then take a soft round brush at 45-50 % opacity with size jitter switched on and start sketching out the character. This setting seems to simulate the pencil on paper feel pretty well. Don't worry about the quality of line or add any fine details. Right now, it's time for forming the overall idea of the drawing. Details will come later.
