Continuing to layer the lights and darks, I use progressively smaller brushes or vary the sizes where necessary. Shortcut keys for that are "[" and "]". I change brush sizes accordingly, larger for darkening/brightening large areas and smaller to sharpen. I also decided to use a light pale orange as the back-light colour.
The back-light is important to create an illusion of 3D form. Usually, in an environment the colour of this light will depend on the overal colour of the backround, i.e it's a reflected light. Without it, the character may appear flat. Which can be intentional, by the way.
